Spring Wake Up Shake up
by Dwayne Kuemper – Service Manager Nanaimo Location
Tim and Al: Hello everyone, welcome to another season of “Tim’n Al’s Tech Tips”
Tim: I can’t believe how fast time flies, it seems we just finished talking about winterization and Bam! It’s spring.
AL: That’s right Tim, time flies and spring is just around the corner, which brings us to today’s subject.
Tim: Today we’re going to talk about the, Wakeup Shakeup.
Al: The what? Wakeup Shakeup??
Tim: That’s right Al, the, Wakeup Shakeup, you know? Breakdown Shakedown.
Al: OK, OK, I think what Tim’s trying to say we’ll be talking about is, Pre-Season inspection and maintenance.
Tim: That’s right Al, and why don’t you start by telling everyone why this is so important.
Al: Tim, it’s very important to test, inspect & see what maintenance is required for your RV before you plan to head out!
Tim: In fact it is best to give yourself at least a couple of weeks in case there are a few issues that may need professional help!
Al: Good point Tim, where do we start with our Wakeup Shakeup?
Tim: Well Al, after your unit is uncovered and inspected for any obvious damage from winters fury, it’s a good idea to start with making sure your battery is fully charged, hooked up correctly and that the connections are clean.
Al: Yes the battery is absolutely crucial and it needs to be in good condition for most appliances to operate.
Tim: Say, have you seen those new Battery Brain’s Arbutus RV has? Are they ever slick. Al: Yes I have seen them, in fact I have one in my RV and I love it.
The Battery Brain monitors battery voltage, and if the voltage gets to low, it disconnects the battery to prevent it from over discharging, therefore preventing battery damage.
Tim: After we have the battery in ship shape, what should we do?
Al: Next you’ll want to turn on and start everything, all appliances, lights and accessories, it’s also a good idea to get your propane system and all appliances leak tested and serviced at your local Arbutus RV and Marine.
Tim: Even if they seem to be working fine. Most RV appliance manufacturers suggest you have your appliances serviced every year.
Al: The Fresh water system should also be flushed and filled.
Tim: That’s right Al, there’s a great product called Tank Fresh that you just add to you tank and flush it out through the lines!
Al: After you have your water system filled you should check it very carefully for leaks.
Tim: It’s also a very good idea to go through your RV and check for moisture intrusion, in cabinets, compartments, ceilings & carpets, look carefully for water staining & mildew
Al: After thoroughly checking the interior you should also check the exterior for possible sealant issues, like cracks in the caulking around doors & windows. Check the roof sealants for cracks & gaps, broken vents or even holes.
Tim: A few small maintenance touchups at the right time & using the appropriate products could prevent larger repairs in the future.
Al: And don’t forget to lubricate your steps, stabilizer jacks, & awnings regularly!
Tim: Well Al, I’m afraid that we are out of time.
Al: Well OK folks, so long for now, if you have any questions about your RV you know who to call.
