Fuel Economy:
TIM: WOW Al! We sure see a lot more RV’s with cages, water bowls and supplies for pets these days. The Sales staff were telling me there are a lot of pet owners on the road now.
AL: Ya Tim. A lot of them are really concerned about the heat in their RV - some of them want air conditioning more for their pets than themselves! At least they care.
TIM: It was good to have that meeting with every-one to see how we could help pet owners travel with their pets. Of course, we are talking “cats and dogs” here. We won’t discuss those exotic ones!
AL: The list I made from that meeting could be helpful for our customers: take paper work from your veterinarian with updated vaccination records, medical history take the name, phone # and address of your vet (you might need this at the border) if it is a cat, take the same brand of litter used at home stock the RV with the pet’s regular brand of food if you don’t know if you can get it on the road use bottled water. Avoid local outlets where you are unsure of the water source.
TIM: Ya, those were good
Al. I’ve got some good ideas too. take a supply of old towels to wipe off dirty paws and to put under water and food bowls to catch spills don’t forget to keep the pets away from the driver to avoid distraction if you have a pet nervous about travelling or with incontinence problems, you may want to to keep it in a secure kennel with a familiar blan-ket and toys in the kennel make sure to stop periodically to give them a break (and the driver!) and some exercise. keep a supply of plastic bags in an outside com-partment for “picking up” outside.
AL: I’ve got some excellent ideas from our cus-tomers over the past few months also: make sure your pet is wearing ID at all times. For a small fee, your vet may consider implanting ID under the animal’s skin. on pet collars, list the name of the animal, owner’s name, phone # of a friend who knows how to reach you on the road and medication the pet may need.• keep current photos of your pet in your RV to use in case the pet gets lost. Great to use on flyers.
TIM: We should let our customers know what we see in the shop - it might help them when they are doing their regular maintenance. Thoroughly vacuum the RV regularly to avoid build up of animal hair. Hair will get in the in the air conditioning filters and floor vents if you don’t stay on top of things. Remove the heating duct covers and get a vacuum hose down as far as possible.
AL: As we used to say growing up...... “have fun petting”
