"Tim & Al's Tool Time Tech Tips "

Winter Storage

Tim : Hi Al.

Al : Hello Tim.

Tim : What's on the agenda today Al?

Al : Well Tim, today we're going to talk about RV's and “Winter Storage”, and option such as RV Covers which are very popular.

Tim : Do you mean a tarp!? Al : No Tim. Tim : Tarps can tear, or get blown off! Damage your RV. Al : Yes Tim I mean RV covers.

Tim : RV Covers? Al : Yes Tim, RV covers, quality RV covers are made from several layers of tough, non-abrasive, water resistant materials specially designed to protect your RV. Tim : OK, OK, but what's the advantage? The RV is still outside.

Al Yes Tim but after several months of winter storage the covered unit is much easier to clean and get ready for use in the spring. Another potentially serious problem with an uncovered RV is the repetitive freezing and thawing of water on the RV.

Tim : That's right Al, the expansion of water when it freezes can make a small crack in sealants a big crack. Al : Yes and in some freezing water opens up cracks and gaps wider and wider until you have a leak.

Tim : OK Al, you've sold me on RV covers, Al, you store your RV outside, why don't you tell us all the preparations you make to help your RV, “weather the weather.”

Al : Well Tim, because I have a “Motor Home” I have checked with the chassis manufacturer and follow their storage recommendations for the chassis.

Tim : Uh-Huh sounds like good advice Al, but what about the “Coach” or “RV” part?

Al : The preparations for storage can vary depending on how long you intend to have the unit in storage, and the local climate. Some people put their unit in storage for six or more months a year while others only a couple of weeks. I will cover the basics, but for more expert advice for your individual situation contact the Service Professionals at Arbutus RV.

Al : I think it is extremely important to ensure your sealants and seams are checked very carefully, especially if you are leaving your unit outside uncovered.

Tim : Al has to check the seams of his pants regularly.

Al : I'm so glad you felt the need to share that Tim. As I was saying, you should clean the unit inside and out. Dirt and debris can cause corrosion on the outside and bad odors on the inside; these odors can be hard to get rid of if left to long. Lubricate moving metal parts like doors, hitches, steps etc. and waxing the RV will go a long way to protecting the finish. If you are going to cover your unit, pick a nice day and make sure the unit is dry. This will help to stop your unit turning green, also using a dehumidifier inside, will help to get rid of some of the moisture, also open all the cupboard doors and flip up the seat cushions so moisture can not become trapped and turn into mildew.

Tim : What about the water system Al? Al : Oh yeah, thanks Tim, don't forget to flush and drain your holding tanks and to protect your water system by “winterizing”. If you're unfamiliar with winterizing, the crew at Arbutus RV can help you with this as well.

Tim : Boy, this Winter Storage seems to be a pretty big subject! Al : That's right Tim, but as with most things, the better you look after them, the better they'll look after you.

Tim : I know another way to “weather the weather”! Al : What's that Tim?

Tim : Go South with the Snow Birds. Al : That right Tim, every year thousands of Canadians head south for the winter. Instead of getting their unit ready for winter storage, these RV'rs do a spring check up and head for the sun. Tim : Ah, RV'rs sure have the good life. Well Al that is all the time we have for todays show. Al : Folks, if you have any questions you know who to call.
